On 9 February 2017, ICCT Associate Fellows Dr. Haroro Ingram and Dr. Craig Whiteside published an article in The Atlantic discussing the enduring propaganda value of Anwar al-Awlaki in connection with the recent US-led ground action targeting AQAP in Yemen. Ingram and Whiteside argue that even unintended actions, such as the death of Awlaki's daughter in the raid, have an impact on the propaganda narrative disseminated by organisations like al-Qaeda and so-called Islamic State. At a time of crude counter-terrorism rhetoric and policies in the West, Awlaki's message of a "war on Islam" is likely to continue to be used by terrorist organisations for propaganda and political purposes.
