On Thursday, 25th July 2024, the Danish Broadcast Corporation (DR) published an interview with ICCT Director Thomas Renard about the risk of a terrorist attack during the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
"Sporting events in general and the Olympics specifically have long been potential targets for political groups. Including terrorist organisations", says Renard.
"The French military is armed to the teeth during the Olympics. And they are preparing for a potential threat from several fronts. The biggest concern is about Islamist or jihadist terrorism. But there is also real concern about right-wing extremism, and potentially in response to that - left-wing or anti-fascist violence against right-wing groups. So there are a number of challenges that the French security services are currently preparing for", he also commented.
