On Sunday, January 26th, the American multimedia publication Lawfare published an article by Tanya Mehra, Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead for the Rule of Law Responses to Terrorism programme at ICCT. In the article, Mehra reflects on the legal initiatives that are being considered in response to the violence that erupted on the 6th and 7th of November 2024.
"Antisemitism and Islamophobia are surging in Europe, including in the Netherlands", Mehra said. "As anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents spike, human rights are being caught in the cross fire. The right to freedom of expression, whether online or offline, and the right to peaceful assembly are under pressure. Adopting only hard security measures is not helpful. In the short term, efforts should be directed at restoring public order and promoting dialogue, as well as bringing the perpetrators to justice. In the long term, it is crucial to invest in social cohesion that addresses antisemitism and Islamophobia equally", she added.
