In the media: Anne Craanen on solutions to the wave of hypermasculinity that aided the Trump election

November 14, 2024

On Monday, November 11th, the Belgian newspaper De Tijd published an article discussing how figures of hypermasculinity were pivotal in the success of Donald Trump's presidential election campaign. The newspaper interviewed former ICCT Research Fellow Anne Craanen about the potential consequences in Europe.

'In our data, we also see a clear increase in online hatred against women in the Low Countries', says Craanen. 'There are also followers of the manosphere in the Netherlands and Belgium.'

Craanen also discussed potential solutions to this wave. 'We need good role models for positive masculinity. Today, young men too often grow up with the idea that masculinity is something negative, while of course that is not the case. Take the idea of the man as protector of the family. That can be translated as a man who works full-time with a woman who stays home with the children, but it can just as easily be the other way around,' she said.
