Anne Craanen joined ICCT in November 2023 as a Research Fellow for the Current and Emerging Threats Programme. She is a researcher with a focus on terrorist use of the internet, Islamist terrorism and the role of gender in terrorism and violent extremism.
She has also worked on initiatives related to tech policy, rule of law responses to online terrorist content, and ethical research into online violent extremist spaces. She used to work as a Research Manager at Tech Against Terrorism, leading on the Terrorist Content Analytics Platform (TCAP), a platform developed by Tech Against Terrorism that alerts tech companies when it detects terrorist content on their platforms. She has also previously worked for Artis International, Dataminr, and the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR).
Anne has presented her work to various stakeholders, including the European Internet Forum (EUIF), UNOCT, the Global Coalition Against Daesh, and national governments, including Canada, the Netherlands, and others. Her expertise has also been sought after on numerous podcasts, including NATO’s DeepDive, Tech Tent, and the European Observatory of Online Hate. She used to host the Tech Against Terrorism podcast. She holds an MA in International Conflict Studies from King's College London and an MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism from UCL.
