On 20 November 2016, the Spanish newspaper El País published an article that examines the preparedness within Europe for a potential increasing influx of returning foreign fighters when the so-called Islamic State looses its power in Syria and Iraq. In the article, ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Christophe Paulussen states that prosecution and detention of returning foreign fighters will not be enough to cope with the problem, with the article going on to argue that a focus on deradicalisation and reintegration of returnees is imperative.
