On 31 October 2017, ICCT Associate Fellow J.M. Berger co-wrote an article in The Washington Post with Amarnath Amarasingam titled, 'With the destruction of the caliphate, the Islamic State has lost far more than territory.' They discuss IS's future in terms of how it has characterised itself as a social movement. Such nature constitutes of factors such as identity fixation and interplay of in-/out-group dynamics. Thus, how it propagates these factors further through propaganda is key for survival.
