From 6 to 7 October 2015, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT), Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS) and Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ convened a NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Brussels. This workshop was titled ‘(Counter-)terrorism in the post-Arab Spring context’ and supported by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. More than 30 non-governmental experts, government officials and practitioners from several countries, including Egypt, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, The Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium, were brought together to exchange ideas on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) strategies in the MENA region in the post-Arab Spring context. The workshop devoted particular attention to the case of Egypt and comparative practices in other Arab countries. This 2-day workshop included insightful presentations and constructive discussions which enabled the group of participants to work towards identifying concrete and actionable recommendations for developing CVE strategies in the MENA region and particularly in Egypt.
