On 11 October 2017, ICCT Associate Fellow Dr. Colin P. Clarke wrote an article in Foreign Affairs on the rise of Salafism in Gaza. The article, titled 'How Salafism's Rise Threatens Gaza' argues that Salafi groups challenge Hamas' claim to being the most truly Islamic group in Palestine. Worrying to both the Israeli government and Hamas', this claim could result in a more radical agenda towards Israel, as young Palestinians disillusioned by a deteriorating economic situation join the Salafist organisation. According to Clarke 'Such a result would likely be disastrous, since it could very well signal the sabotage of yet another change for progress in one of the world's longest-running conflicts.'
