Third Regional Workshop on the Implementation of UN SEC RES 1624 (2005)
Together with the UN Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), ICCT organised a regional workshop on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1624 (2005) in Algiers, Algeria. Resolution 1624 calls upon states to prohibit and prevent incitement to commit terrorism by enhancing dialogue and bringing together different actors including governments and civil society.
The three-day meeting took place from 16 – 18 June 2013 and sought to further develop cooperation between governments and civil society to prevent incitement motivated by extremism and intolerance. In addition to government representatives from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia as well as a wide range of inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations from across North Africa, ICCT Director Peter Knoope and ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Bibi van Ginkel chaired several sessions during the workshop.
This was the third time that ICCT assisted the UN in the organisation of a Resolution 1624 regional workshop by making full use of its expertise in the field and its vast civil society network across the world. Peter Knoope highlighted that “after last year’s regional workshop for Maghreb and Sahel States, this meeting was a further important step in the implementation of Resolution 1624. We had frank and productive discussions on the best ways to prohibit and prevent incitement using legal means and by addressing social conditions that could be conducive to the spread of terrorism”.
