Action Perspectives - Anti-Institutional and Right-Wing Extremism

ICCT is producing two concise action perspectives that Dutch municipalities can take into the field to recognise and address local manifestations of anti-institutional and non-violent right-wing extremism.

This project is being funded by the Social Stability Expertise Unit (ESS).

About the project

Extra body

Dutch security organisations such as the AIVD and the NCTV have flagged anti-institutional as an emerging threat, while warning for the sustained presence of right-wing extremism.  While not necessarily direct or physical in nature, these can undermine the democratic character of Dutch rule of law. These forms of extremism tend to express themselves locally.

As such, it is important to raise awareness about anti-institutional extremism and non-violent right-wing extremism amongst municipal officials.

ICCT experts will produce two 'action perspectives' on anti-institutional extremism and non-violent right-wing extremism respectively to facilitate this end. These will draw on a literature review, open-source research, and an expert roundtable to:

  • Explore the social impact of anti-institutional extremism and non-violent
    right-wing extremism ;
  • Investigate the make-up  of groups and movements that adhere to these types of ideologies ;
  • Make concrete and actionable recommendations.

These action perspectives will be shared amongst Dutch municipalities, and may be published via ICCT in English to spread the insight to an even wider audience.
