Teun van Dongen joined the ICCT in May 2021 and was a Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead of the Current and Emerging Threats Programme until April 2023. In this capacity he led the ICCT’s efforts to monitor, analyse and research various forms of extremism and terrorism, including the ideologies, structure and modus operandi of the groups and movements involved.
Previously, he worked as a policy analyst at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) and as a Senior Researcher at the Verwey-Jonker Institute. He has also been a lecturer at Leiden University, the Free University and the Inholland University of Applied Sciences. Teun regularly writes for academic journals, newspapers and international affairs magazines and frequently appears in the media to talk about current events in his field if expertise. He gained a PhD degree from Leiden University with a doctoral dissertation on counter terrorism effectiveness.
In 2017 Amsterdam University Press published his first book, ‘Radicalisering ontrafeld: tien redenen om een terroristische aanslag te plegen’ (‘Radicalisation dissected: ten reasons to commit a terrorist attack’). In 2020, he published his second book, called ‘Te vuur en te zwaard: effectiviteit en overdaad in de westerse strijd tegen terrorisme’ (‘By any means necessary: effectiveness and excess in the Western fight against terrorism’).
