Recently, Al Jazeera spoke to ICCT director Thomas Renard about the "Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism," a summit hosted by the US and focused on far-left political violence. Renard argued the gathering reflects how counterterrorism in the US has become "completely politicised, instrumentalised," pointing out that far-right terrorism has all but vanished from the current US strategy despite remaining "strongly anchored and rooted" in the country. He also noted that several European nations, wary of the summit's framing but unwilling to antagonise Washington, have signalled their discomfort by sending only junior ministers to attend.
