On Tuesday, December 2, the Dutch newspaper NRC published an interview with Bibi van Ginkel, Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead at ICCT, on the challenges of addressing extremist content on social media.
In the interview, van Ginkel explains that while explicitly violent or hateful material is often easy to identify, a significant portion of online extremism exists in a “grey area”.
Van Ginkel notes how extremist groups deliberately exploit irony, memes, emojis, and cultural references to evade moderation, stressing that context and local knowledge are crucial: areas where automated systems still fall short.
