Thomas Renard has been appointed as the new Director of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism - The Hague (ICCT).
ICCT is pleased to announce that Dr Thomas Renard will start as Director of the ICCT from 15 September. Renard will be taking over the position from Interim Director Alexander von Rosenbach.
As part of ICCT, Dr Renard will be responsible for leading the organisation’s management team, broadening our partnerships, and advancing ICCT’s independent research on counter-terrorism.

Dr Thomas Renard previously worked with the Egmont Institute, a Brussels-based think tank, where he headed research on terrorism and counter-terrorism. He has published extensively on returning foreign fighters, radicalisation in prison, and counter-terrorism. His forthcoming book The Evolution of Counter-Terrorism Since 9/11 (Routledge) releases on 24 September.
Dr Renard regularly briefs governments and international organisations, and appears frequently in international media. He obtained his PhD from Ghent University, Belgium, and his thesis received the ‘Best thesis on Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism’ biannual award from the jury of the Terrorism Research Initiative (TRI), in August 2021.
