On 6 March, L’Echo published an article examining how the conflict involving Iran could generate terrorism risks, cyber threats, and potential refugee flows, which may in turn put Europe’s security systems and new asylum policies to the test. It included an interview with Thomas Renard, Director of the ICCT.
In the interview, Renard further addressed the risk of Iranian retaliation in Europe, noting that Iranian-linked operations often focus on specific targets. “They primarily target Iranian dissidents, Israeli targets and American targets,” he said. He also pointed to networks connected to organisations such as Hamas and Hezbollah that operate in Europe through propaganda and fundraising, adding that “in the current context, one can imagine they could be mobilised for operations of a terrorist nature.”
