On Saturday, August 10th, Belgian newspaper De Morgen quoted Thomas Renard in an article discussing the role of social media in radicalising more and more young people.
"The audience there is getting younger and younger – children are getting smartphones in their hands at an increasingly younger age. Children are vulnerable. For example, teenagers do not always have the necessary critical thinking skills to interpret radical images. They are also in a phase of life where they have to channel a lot of emotions. They are looking for a way to express their anger and frustration. That is already the first challenge for the services. Because twenty years ago, that same teenager would say something out of frustration to a friend, now he posts it on TikTok. But does he really mean it? Will that teenager take action? That is a difficult decision”, Renard said.
