In the Media: Bibi van Ginkel on the Right-Wing Extremist Riots in the Netherlands

September 26, 2025

On Monday, September 22nd, the Dutch Radio Station, NPO Radio 1, featured an episode discussing the most recent far-right anti-immigration protests, which occurred in The Hague, Netherlands. They interviewed Bibi van Ginkel, Programme Lead of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) pillar of ICCT and Senior Research Fellow.

Van Ginkel explained that there has been an emancipation of extreme right-wingers, with taboos lifted and more open expression of extremist views and symbols.

Furthermore, Van Ginkel addressed the multifaceted types of violence which were on display at the anti-immigration riots." There is certainly the political aspect that translates into violence, which is always a problem," Van Ginkel stated regarding the role of political polarisation. "But there is also among young people - and this is also noticeable online - a kind of nihilistic fascination with violence," she added, suggesting the hybridisation of these kinds of groups results in a marriage of convenience of some sort.
