Menso Hartgers is a research fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in The Hague, and currently seconded to the European Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) in Brussels. As part of his secondment, Menso is the deputy team leader of the Security Coordination and Enhancement (SCOPE) project, a facility that directly supports the European Commission in ensuring coordination and coherence across its external actions and projects in the domains of countering terrorism (CT)/preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE), mitigating chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks, combatting organised crime, protecting critical infrastructure (cyber, maritime, and aviation), and guaranteeing climate security.
Prior to working on SCOPE, Menso was the ICCT project officer and acting functional unit coordinator at the Radicalisation Awareness Network - Policy Support (RAN PS), where he supported and coordinated the implementation of capacity-building and knowledge-sharing activities. As a researcher, Menso focuses on various thematic areas, ranging from anti-systems and anti-government extremism to the exploitation of gaming platforms by extremists. He has presented his work at various multilateral fora such as the Council of Europe, the RAN, COTER, and Europol.
Menso joined ICCT as an EU CT/PCVE & Strategic Communications intern in July of 2021 and has a background in Middle Eastern Studies and Crisis and Security Management.
