ICCT Research Fellow in NRC

March 28, 2017

On 27 March 2017, ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Bibi van Ginkel was cited in the Dutch NRC newspaper with regards to the EU’s policy on counter-terrorism.

Dr. van Ginkel states that while the threat of terrorism is increasing in the EU, counter-terrorism policies are lacking. Currently, it is unclear who is in charge of EU-anti-terrorism policy for example, and there is still a disproportional degree of utilisation of security systems set in place by the EU, such as the Schengen Information System II. Countries in the EU have made strides to lessen the policy gap by making recruiting, training and participating in terrorist groups punishable by law. However, there still remains much to be done.
