Editorial and Communications Internship

Allowance: The successful applicant will receive a stipend of 525 Euros per month.

Position summary

ICCT is seeking an intern to support our Editorial and Communications work. The intern will assist with ICCT’s outreach, online communications, brand awareness, and events organisation, while also providing editorial support. Key editorial tasks include assisting our leading journal – Perspectives on Terrorism (PT) – as well as with ICCT publications. This involves editorial support, research assistance, project support, and routine administrative tasks. Communication duties include contributing to online communication activities (website, social media, newsletter), and supporting the organisation of events.

The intern is expected to be highly organised and independent with an excellent attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively. The successful applicant will be working in a dynamic think tank in the field of terrorism at the intersection of security, politics and development.

Tasks and responsibilities 

Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, you will:

Editorial

  • Assist in the editing of ICCT and Perspectives on Terrorism (PT) publications.
  • Lead on formatting and designing PT and ICCT publications using Adobe Suite programmes (especially InDesign) and Canva.
  • Support the publishing of manuscripts on the ICCT and PT websites.
  • Contribute to incoming and outgoing editorial correspondence, liaising with external partners such as academics, policymakers, dignitaries, and practitioners.

Communications 

  • Maintain the ICCT and PT websites and other communication products (e.g., newsletter), including drafting texts and creating designs.
  • Help expand ICCT’s and PT’s online presence by assisting in managing social media accounts and creating texts, graphics, and visuals.
  • Monitor media and online platforms for ICCT and PT citations and mentions in news outlets, international organisations, and academic journals.
  • Track trends on social media platforms and websites and suggest improvements to enhance reach and engagement.
  • Support and help grow a network of press contacts, influencers, and online ambassadors.
  • Assist in organising public events and expert meetings, including tasks such as sending invitations, managing registrations, and arranging travel and accommodation.
  • Other duties as required.

Key requirements 

  • Enrolled as a student in a university or university of applied sciences (Dutch: HBO) throughout the entire duration of the internship. Degrees related to counter-terrorism, political science, journalism, anthropology, or communications are preferred.

Key competencies 

  • Excellent communication and writing skills, with strong attention to detail and creativity.

  • Excellent (native or near-native) command of English; 

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with CMS platforms (e.g., Drupal) and CRM tools (e.g., MailChimp).

  • Good command of graphic design software, including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Canva.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks effectively.

  • Independent, hands-on, and self-driven work style, with the ability to work autonomously on assigned tasks and projects.

  • Previous editing experience is an advantage.

  • Comfortable working in an international and multicultural environment.

  • Knowledge of and interest in counter-terrorism or countering violent extremism is considered an advantage.
