ICCT in the Media: Teun van Dongen on IS prison attack and repatriation

February 14, 2022

On 28 January, Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead Teun van Dongen was invited to an interview with Nieuwsuur to discuss the attack on an ISIS prison in northeast Syria. Teun indicated that ISIS trying to recapture its own fighters is no surprise and its direct goal is to impress the media while showing that the group remains strong. Teun also comments on the potential consequences for Europe, stating that there is a need for European countries to repatriate and prosecute prisoners in their country of origin in order to mitigate the harm.

You can listen to the full interview below. (starts at 33:50).
