On 13 October 2016, ICCT Research Fellow Liesbeth van der Heide was featured in the Dutch newspaper Trouw. The article examines the case of a Dutch foreign fighter who fled from territory controlled by the so-called Islamic State (IS) and is currently in interned in an IS defector camp in Syria.
Van der Heide comments on the role of the government in retrieving the Dutch citizen, the possible motives of the foreign fighter and whether his de-radicalisation would be possible.
