ICCT Associate Fellow on How Western Women Are Drawn to IS

September 29, 2016

On 8 September 2016, ICCT Associate Fellow Seran de Leede was featured in a news article by the Dutch public broadcaster NOS, after it was revealed that a Dutch woman planned an attack on an amusement park in the Netherlands. De Leede argued that this case provides a clear example of the importance of social media platforms for terrorist organisations in reaching out to Western women, be it to convince them to travel to conflict theatres or carry out attacks in their home countries. According to De Leede, there are "plenty of women who are determined to choose this path, out of political or religious reasoning".
