NATO Advanced Research Workshops: Countering Terrorism

ICCT and the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies organised a Workshop in Brussels on (counter-)terrorism in the post-Arab Spring context. In this two day workshop, developments on (counter-)terrorism in the Post-Arab Spring context were discussed by more than 30 non-governmental experts, government officials and practitioners from several countries, including Egypt, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, The Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium. Participants worked towards identifying concrete and actionable recommendations for developing CVE strategies in the MENA region and particularly in Egypt.

ICCT and the Centre for Security Programs in Astana held a roundtable expert meeting/ workshop in Astana, Kazakhstan, with the aim of stimulating dialogue between policymakers and others regarding the trends, responses and post-2014 scenarios for violent extremism. The two-day workshop was attended by thirty-five representatives of various Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the region, the European Union Delegation to Kazakhstan, the Centres for Strategic Studies of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan as well as academic representatives from the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University from Kyrgyzstan. Also present were independent researchers, directors of local non-governmental organisations and international experts and scholars. A final report, entitled "Violent Extremism in Central Asia: Trends, Responses and Post-2014 Scenarios," was also produced to summarise the recommendations derived from this meeting.
