Contact

Fiona de Londras is Professor of Global Legal Studies at the University of Birmingham (UK) and Honorary Professor at the Australian National University. Her work is primarily concerned with the role, operation and impacts of rights in complex policy areas, with a particular focus on counter-terrorism at national and transnational levels.

de Londras’ work has been funded by the British Academy, European Commission, Leverhulme Trust, and the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. It has included large scale socio-legal work on the impact, legitimacy and effectiveness of EU counter-terrorism (the SECILE project), and ground-breaking empirically-informed work on accountability and review for counter-terrorism in the United Kingdom (with Blackbourn and Morgan). In work funded by the AHRC, she is now bringing insights from work on rights and counter-terrorism to bear on parliamentary scrutiny and review of rights-related matters during the COVID-19 pandemic as PI of the COVID-19 Review Observatory.

As well as her academic work, de Londras undertakes human rights law and policy consultancy work for governments, independent statutory bodies, and international organisations, and political consultancy work on human rights and constitutional matters. She regularly commentates in newspapers and on radio and television on rights-related matters. She was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Law in 2017.
