In the media: Thomas on Youth Radicalisation

On 11 February, the New York Times had an interview with the Director of ICCT, Thomas Renard, to discuss how extremist groups — including white supremacists, neo-Nazis, jihadist networks and other violent movements — are increasingly using popular online gaming platforms to recruit and radicalise children.

Renard described the development as "shocking" and without precedent, calling it "nothing we have ever seen before". Talking about the factors behind this increase, he explained: "Part of it is a bit of a snowball effect. Perhaps what is happening is we are now confronted with several things that come together quite nicely: the first digital generation, young people who grew up with smartphones in their hands and parents who were quite permissive".
