In the media: Thomas Renard on the threat of Jihadist groups exploiting the Syrian crisis

January 12, 2025

On Sunday, January 12th, the Cypriot newspaper Phileleftheros published an article highlighting the threat represented by Jihadist groups that might exploit the Syrian crisis to their advantage. The newspaper interviewed Thomas Renard, the director of the ICCT.

'What concerns me now is a series of issues. First, there’s the fate of international foreign fighters and their family members who are still detained in Syria, mainly in the northern part of the country under Kurdish forces', he said. 'Another issue is that Syria’s new leader, al-Julani, is a former member of a jihadist organisation. It now appears he’s transformed his belief in global jihad and is focusing on a national struggle. But what will happen with the other jihadist groups? Will he be forced to fight them to stop their activities in Syria, or will he provide them some form of sanctuary?', he added.
