On Sunday, September 14th, the French radio news network, RFI, published an article about the "sovereign citizens" movement. It includes an interview with Thomas Renard, Director of the ICCT.
In the interview, Renard explored the belief system behind the movement. "We are dealing with citizens who want to live completely removed from society, because they see it, or the elites, as a source of danger to their individual freedoms," he summarised. Highlighting the deeper danger of such a movement, Renard stated his worries: "The questioning of the democratic order by a significant number of citizens in Europe poses a broader problem of living together."
