On Thursday, October 9, the Belgian Newspaper, De Morgen, published an article about the rising terrorist threat in Belgium, following a foiled attack on Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The piece includes an interview with Thomas Renard, Director of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) in The Hague.
In the interview, Renard analysed the convergence of several worrying trends. “Jihadism is on the rise because it is reorganising itself after the fall of the caliphate,” he explained. He also highlighted how current global tensions, particularly the conflict in Gaza, are fueling polarisation and violent propaganda across Europe. “The conflict in Gaza is fueling propaganda and calls for violence, and on the other hand, we’re also seeing attempted attacks by the far right,” Renard said.
