On Friday, October 10, the Dutch Newspaper, NRC, published an article about the foiled attack on Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. As part of the article, the paper interviewed Thomas Renard, Director of the ICCT.
Renard expressed that he is "not surprised" by the nature of the threat. "The threat of jihadist terrorism has been increasing for several years," he stated. Furthermore, Renard asserted the plan for a possible attack on De Wever "meets all the hallmarks" of that trend. "It's not a question of if a jihadist attack will take place in Western Europe, but when," he summarised.
