In the media: Thomas Renard and Meryl Demuynck on the challenges raised by the migration-terrorism nexus

February 23, 2025

On Sunday, February 23rd, the German newspaper Die Zeit published an article written by Thomas Renard, the director of the ICCT, and Meryl Demuynck, Research Fellow for the P/CVE pillar at ICCT.

They explored the recent terrorist attacks in Munich, Villach (Austria) or Mulhouse (France), which raised again many questions and concerns about the potential threat associated with immigrants. Furthermore, opinion polls suggest that negative views on immigration are growing across Europe, with an increasing number of people linking immigration to insecurity. In essence, they argue that security challenges related to immigration should not be dismissed, as illustrated by a number of immigrants that are suspected of radicalisation or involved in terrorist plots. However, an evidence-based analysis of attacks involving immigrants over the past decade shows that they are far from representing the main terrorist threat in Europe, and this trend has not increased over time. In fact, immigrants are frequently targeted by terrorism themselves.
