In an opinion piece for Nederlands Dagblad, diplomat Peeter Knoope, a distinguished fellow at the ICCT, warns that the Netherlands' growing investment in defense must not come at the expense of its expertise in preventing conflicts. Yet that, he argues, is exactly what threatens to happen. A strong military may be necessary, but it is no substitute for the diplomatic skill and experience that stop conflicts before they escalate.
