On 3 October, Mark Singleton met the President of Eurojust, Michèle Coninsx, and discussed a number of matters of importance. The visit came at a crucial time; the recent shooting in Brussels, the phenomenon of returning foreign fighters, and the sudden and swift rise of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq, clearly demonstrate the need for a coordinated response. On 5 June of this year, the phenomenon of foreign fighters returning from Syria and posing serious threats on European soil was discussed by leading counter-terrorism presecutors at Eurojust's meeting in The Hague. This meeting was the second held by Eurojust on the topic of returning foreign fighters in the space of one year, with the first held in June 2013. Eurojust stimulates and improves the coordination of investigations and prosecutions between the competent authorities in the Member States and improves the cooperation between the competent authorities of the Member States, in particular by facilitating the execution of interntaional mutual legal assistance and the implementation of extradition requests.
