ICCT and CTED Join Hands in Analysis of Terrorism Trends

Jean-Paul Laborde, Counter-Terrorist  Commitee Executeive Directorate (CTED), and  Mark Singleton, Director of ICCT, met 23  September to discuss ways to further implement  the relevant requirements of Security Council    Resolution 2129 (2013). "As we are confronted with new terrorism threats and challenges, it would be useful to analyse and identify those trends in order to recommend corresponding actions to the Counter-Terrorism Committee and to the Security Council," said CTED Executive Director Laborde. "ICCT has its unique academic strength and international expertise and looks forward to consolidating its alliance with CTED on those topical research activities, as well as in implementing CVE [countering violent extremism] projects for States in need," stressed ICCT Director Singleton. Although ICCT and CTED are already close partners in capacity-building projects in the area of countering violent extremism and criminal justice, there is considerable potential for the two entities to strengthen their cooperation on, inter alia, thematic and regional analysis of foreign terrorist fighters and kidnapping for ransom. CTED works to monitor, facilitate and promote the implementation of Security Council Resolutions 1373 and 1624 by Member States, and was recently tasked by the Council to establish a network with academia focusing on terrorism analysis and collecting good counter-terrorism practices.
