ICCT Research Fellow Liesbeth van der Heide in Newsweek

July 11, 2017

On 6 July 2017, ICCT Research Fellow Liesbeth van der Heide was cited in Newsweek.

In the context of so-called 'Islamic State' (IS) indoctrinating and using children in their campaigns, IS poses a much greater challenge than other extremist groups that try to radicalise communities. Van der Heide argues that because IS “was literally running a state-like operation, providing education, health care and legal services to citizens", this makes it much more likely that the children who lived in IS territory were influenced by IS ideology. Newsweek states that as far away as the Netherlands is from the Middle East, "security officials are preparing for the possible arrival of some 80 Dutch children born or bred in IS territory. Other countries around the world are grappling with the same problem: what to do with large numbers of potentially radicalized youth without similar precedents to guide them".
