Second Expert Meeting on Supporting Curriculum Development for the International Institute of Justice and the Rule of Law in Tunisia

The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague (ICCT), the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation (CGCC), and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), organised the second expert meeting on curriculum development for the International Institute of Justice and the Rule of Law in Tunisia. The meeting, hosted by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) with the generous support of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, brought together a group of leading rule of law training and capacity building experts to follow up on the recommendations that arose from the April 2013 expert meeting in Brussels, and discuss opportunities, challenges, and next steps in supporting the Institute going forward.
Experts from governments and intergovernmental bodies participated in the meeting, including representatives from the European Police College (CEPOL), the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. A number of non-governmental organisations also participated, including experts from the Asser Institute, CGCC, GCSP, ICCT, ISS, Saferworld, Transparency International, and the United States Institute for Peace (USIP).
The main objective of the meeting was to discuss three draft curriculum development tools which arose out of recommendations from the April 2013 expert meeting in Brussels. Participants expressed their appreciation for the quality of the draft products and provided extremely rich and insightful suggestions for their improvement. Based on feedback provided over the course of the meeting as well as ongoing engagement by participating experts, the curriculum development tools will be revised and ultimately submitted for consideration by the Institute’s Board of Governors.
